Improving household welfare remains a central challenge in Egypt, where poverty persists and labor markets are characterized by high levels of informality and a large non-wage sector. Understanding how different forms of labor market mobility translate into economic gains is therefore critical. This paper examines how labor market dynamics across adjacent panel survey waves—including job ladder movements, employment transitions, and shifts in employment status—are associated with household and individual economic mobility. Using 25 years of panel data from the Egypt Labor Market Panel Survey, we analyze four pairs of adjacent waves: 1998–2006, 2006–2012, 2012–2018, and 2018–2023. We find that distinct dimensions of labor market dynamics operate through different channels. Job ladder movements are closely linked to wealth accumulation and gains in formality-adjusted wages. Employment transitions play a central role in shaping individual income dynamics and are particularly important for upward wealth and income mobility at the lower end of the distribution, including exits from poverty. Changes in employment status influence longer-term wealth trajectories and class mobility, with transitions into non-wage activities often associated with more favorable outcomes than wage employment. These results highlight the heterogeneous pathways through which labor markets shape economic mobility and underscore the need for policies that recognize the diversity of employment trajectories.
