Pervasive employment informality is a defining feature of developing country labor markets. Informal employment is, however, heterogeneous, as it can act as a trap or a stepping stone to formal jobs and decent work. This paper explores the dynamics of employment informality in Egypt, using a job ladder approach that distinguishes among informal jobs. The work leverages five waves of panel data (1998, 2006, 2012, 2018, 2023) to explore how job ladder dynamics have changed over time, as well as who is able to move up, down, or laterally on the job ladder. The results show workers increasingly stuck on the lower tiers of the job ladder over time.
