Sudan Labor Market Panel Survey 2022 (SLMPS 2022) – Dissemination Webinar

FromSep 18, 2023 To Sep 18, 2023

Online Webinar

Sudan is the fourth-largest country in the MENA region, with a 2022 population estimate of 46.9 million. The country has experienced five years of declining GDP over 2018-2022. Sudan is also a fragile and conflict-afflicted state, with, in 2022, 1.1 million refugees and 3.7 internally displaced persons (IDPs). The MENA region generally is short on data and under-researched compared to other regions (Das, Do, Shaines, & Srikant, 2013; Ekhator-Mobayode & Hoogeveen, 2022).

Prior to the 2022 Sudan Labor Market Panel Survey (SLMPS), the last nationally representative labor force survey in Sudan was in 2011 and the last nationally representative household survey of any kind was in 2014. In 2022, the Economic Research Forum and the SLMPS principal investigators (Dr. Ragui Assaad and Dr. Caroline Krafft), in collaboration with Sudan’s Central Bureau for Statistics and the Sudan Ministry of Labour and Administrative Reforms, completed fieldwork on the nationally-representative 2022 SLMPS.

The objective of the SLMPS 2022 is to facilitate better understandings of labor market dynamics and outcomes in Sudan and to provide high-quality and reliable data sufficient for in-depth, multi-dimensional analyses of economic and labor market issues in Sudan. The SLMPS fills a critical need for data in a time of much uncertainty in Sudan and will serve to activate a new research community and simultaneously inform policy decisions by capturing the details of the Sudanese labor market, and the socio-economic characteristics of its labor force participants.

In addition, the SLMPS 2022 follows a rich heritage of LMPS surveys conducted in three other countries: Egypt, Jordan and Tunisia. Currently available datasets from the LMPS project are four waves in Egypt (1998, 2006, 2012, 2018), two in Jordan (2010, 2016) and one in Tunisia (2014).

The SLMPS 2022 is funded by the IZA – Institute of Labor Economics GLM | LIC project along with the G2LM | LIC call for COVID-19 research, in addition to funding from the World Bank for the gender sensitive LSMS+ modules.

Event Objectives, Agenda and Organization:

The event will be held virtually on zoom, to introduce the SLMPS, outlining the details of the design of the survey, including the topics covered by this multi-purpose household survey and the complexities of the sampling. In addition, the event will provide a platform to discuss key findings on the structure of the labor force and employment in Sudan among the research and policy communities. The event will also an opportunity for researchers to get an introduction to the SLMPS data. The event will be held in English and Arabic interpretation will be provided.
