This paper examines the causal impact of maternal education on childhood overweight and obesity using the 2022 Türkiye Child Survey (TCS) microdata provided by the Turkish Statistical Institute (TURKSTAT). We employ an instrumental variable (IV) estimation strategy for children aged 2–17, exploiting the 1997 compulsory schooling reform as an instrument for maternal education. Our results suggest that higher maternal education decreases the probability of a child being overweight or obese; however, the estimated effects are not statistically significant. We further examine the impact of maternal education on children’s dietary and exercise habits and time spent using electronic devices to explore potential behavioral pathways. The results indicate that maternal education does not significantly affect these outcomes either. These findings suggest that the additional maternal schooling induced by the compulsory schooling reform does not translate into detectable improvements in the health behaviors examined or into a significant reduction in childhood overweight and obesity. Overall, our findings provide limited evidence of a causal effect of maternal education on childhood overweight and obesity in Türkiye.
