Household enterprises are a defining feature of labor markets in developing countries, yet their relationship with workers’ labor market position remains poorly understood. This paper asks whether household enterprise dynamics help workers climb the job ladder, using five waves of the nationally representative Egypt Labor Market Panel Survey (1998-2023) and logit and multinomial logit models. We find that household enterprise creation and persistence raise upward mobility odds for workers at the bottom of the job ladder, while enterprise closure does not, and that household enterprise creation pulls non-employed individuals into employment. Enterprise persistence functions as a powerful employment anchor, reducing both switching and exit odds, and is associated with higher-quality entry positions for household members not previously employed. With steady deterioration in upward mobility over 25 years in Egypt’s labor market overall, household enterprises offer an important route for upward mobility for the most precarious workers at the bottom of the job ladder.
