Master in Public Administration in International Development

Harvard Kennedy School’s newest degree program, the MPA in International Development (MPA/ID), is designed to prepare the next generation of leaders in international development. It is an economics-centered, multi-disciplinary program, combining rigorous training in analytical and quantitative methods with an emphasis on policy and practice.   The MPA/ID Program is chaired by Professor Dani Rodrik. The intellectual home of the MPA/ID students is Harvard's university-wide research center, the Center for International Development (CID) based at the Kennedy School and directed by Professor Ricardo Hausmann.   The MPA/ID Program is a rigorous, economics-centered, multi-disciplinary program designed to train the next generation of practitioners and policy makers in the challenging field of international development. The core curriculum includes doctoral-level courses in microeconomics, macroeconomics, quantitative methods/econometrics, public sector management, institutions, democratic governance, and the practice of economic development. Electives are offered in areas ranging from negotiations to finance and environmental policy.   The MPA/ID Program offers unparalleled training for a professional career in international development. The mix of theoretical rigor with a practical approach has proven to be a winning combination in the professional world.   We are seeking applicants who:
  • are committed to the social, political, and economic growth of developing and transitional economy countries
  • excel in economics and mathematics
  • have strong academic records
  • have several years of professional work experience
  • show potential for leadership in their future careers
We are very proud to have enrolled students from more than 100 countries over the years. However, some areas are still underrepresented, so we would especially appreciate your assistance in locating candidates from Africa, the Middle East and the former Soviet Union.   Over two thirds of our students are citizens of developing or transitional economy countries. Full scholarships are available for qualified candidates. Additional information about the MPA/ID Program is online, and our HKS brochure is available here.   Prospective students may wish to attend the Open House in Cambridge, MA on October 15, the Washington DC Info Session on September 21, or a Virtual Info Session on September 12 orSeptember 27.  More information and links to register can be found here.
