Creative Horizons: Policy, Innovation, and Twinning in the Mediterranean
FromNov 14, 2024 To Nov 14, 2024
Online Webinar
Overview
The creative industries, defined as sectors involving the creation, production, and distribution of goods and services that are cultural, artistic, or entertainment-based, offer substantial potential for enhancing the value chain between northern and southern Mediterranean countries. These industries encompass fields such as design, media, crafts, and marketing1. They have the potential to serve as dynamic clusters that foster cross-regional collaboration and innovation (UNESCO, 2013). By leveraging diverse creative talents and resources, Mediterranean countries can boost their economic resilience and competitiveness in the global market (World Economic Forum, 2021).
Developing creative industries as clusters can also drive regional integration and economic diversification. According to a ECF Cluster “Mapster” 82 South Med clusters were identified, 12% of the south med clusters are operating in creative & digital industries. Northern Mediterranean countries, with their advanced technological infrastructure and established creative sectors, can partner with southern counterparts, which offer rich cultural heritage and emerging creative talent (OECD, 2020). This synergy can create cross-border value chains, where the exchange of ideas, skills, and resources amplifies the impact of creative projects and initiatives (European Commission, 2022). By nurturing these clusters, the Mediterranean region can unlock new opportunities for sustainable development and strengthen its position as a global hub for creativity and innovation.
This webinar aims to highlight the potential of creative industries clusters in the South Med region, focusing on key findings, challenges, and bottlenecks in the value chains. It will foster dialogue among stakeholders to address these challenges. The webinar will also present policy toolkits, recommendations, and ongoing twinning projects to promote innovation and sustainable development within the sector.
