Shawkat Hammoudeh

Shawkat Hammoudeh is a Palestinian-American with a Ph.D. in Economics from the University of Kansas. He joined Drexel University in 1990 as an associate professor after working in the real world, and currently he is a professor of economics and international business. He has taught courses at the undergraduate, MBA and Ph.D. levels. He was also visiting professor at Montpellier Business School in France. Prior to joining Drexel, he worked as a senior economist with the Organization of Arab Petroleum-Exporting Countries (OAPEC) which is headquartered in Kuwait. During his tenure at OAPEC, he participated in the Interdependence Project between OAPEC and ENI in Rome, Italy. This project modelled economic, financial, trade and oil interdependence between European and the Middle Eastern countries. He was also a member of the Steering Committee of the Euro-Arab Dialogue project. Before joining OAPEC, he worked as an associate research scientist at Kuwait Institute for Scientific Research. During 1988-1989, he worked as a consultant with the World Bank working on Jordan’s Melody Energy-Economy in Amman, Jordan. He is a prolific researcher who has produced more than 120 articles in highly respected, refereed journals. His current research interest includes three areas: Commodity markets, capital markets and environment economics. He is well known for his research in the oil, gold, and financial markets. In this second research area, he is very active in doing research on the capital markets including those of the BRICKS and oil-exporting countries. In environmental economics, he has done research on the relationships between economic growth, energy consumption and carbon markets. Currently, he is working on renewable energy and hedging in the spot and futures carbon EUA and CER markets.
