Sherine Al Shawarby

Professor of Economics, Cairo University

Prof. Al-Shawarby is a Professor of Economics in Cairo University. She was the Dean of the Faculty of Economics and Political Science - Future University in Egypt (FUE) between 2020 and 2022, and the Vice Dean of the Faculty of Economics and Political Science in Cairo University between 2015 and 2016. She also served as Deputy Minister for Economic Justice at the Ministry of Finance between 2014 and 2015, and Senior Economist at the World Bank between 2001 and 2013. She published numerous studies and co-authored many World Bank reports on the Egyptian economy and MENA region. Her scope of interest is on poverty, welfare and social protection. She recently had a chapter on inequality and another one on the food subsidy system in Egypt in two World Bank published books. Her latest advisory work was in Egypt with the Ministry of Planning and Economic Development, the Medium, Small and Micro Enterprise Development Agency and the African Development Bank, and in Algeria with the Ministry of Finance and the World Bank. She is currently working in a multi-country project with the World Bank on “Financing Cash Transfer Programs”.
