Sevket Pamuk

Professor of Economics and Economic History, Bogaziçi (Bosphorus) University

Şevket Pamuk is Professor of Economics and Economic History at Bogaziçi University, Istanbul. He graduated from Yale University and obtained his PhD in Economics from University of California, Berkeley. He is the author of many books and articles on the economic history of the Ottoman Empire, the Middle East and Europe including A Monetary History of the Ottoman Empire (Cambridge, 2000), and more recently, Uneven Centuries: Economic History of Turkey since 1820 (Princeton, 2018). Pamuk has worked on money, wages, prices, trade, state finances, economic growth, institutions and institutional change. He was Professor and Chair in Contemporary Turkish Studies at the London School of Economics 2008-2013, President of European Historical Economics Society (2003-2005), President of Asian Historical Economics Society (2012-2014), Editor of European Economic History Review (2011-2014), is fellow of Centre for Economic Policy Research (London), fellow of the British Academy, member of Academia Europea and Science Academy, Istanbul.
