Adeel Malik

Globe Fellow in the Economies of Muslim Societies at the Oxford Centre for Islamic Studies and an Associate Professor in Development Economics at the University of Oxford

Adeel Malik is associate professor of development economics at the University of Oxford’s Department of International Development. He is also a Globe Fellow in the Economies of Muslim Societies at the Oxford Centre for Islamic Studies. At Oxford he convenes the popular graduate-level course on Political Economy of the Middle East. He has supervised numerous graduate students who have specialized on various aspects of Middle Eastern political economy. Professor Malik has a strong multi-disciplinary orientation and uses both quantitative and qualitative research methods. He has worked on a variety of themes, including the political economy of private sector development in the Middle East and the relationship between Islam, politics and development. He is currently working on a series of papers focusing on the political economy factors underpinning trade liberalization in North Africa. Professor Malik’s publications have appeared in reputed academic journals. He is the co-editor, along with Ishac Diwan and Izak of Atiyas, of “Crony Capitalism in the Middle East: Business and Politics from Liberalization to the Arab Spring, published by Oxford University Press in 2019. His research has featured in the CNN, Al Jazeera, Financial Times, the New York Times, Washington Post, Project Syndicate, Foreign Policy, and Foreign Affairs.
