The Quality of Life of Palestinians under a Chronic Political Conflict: Assessment and Determinants

Abstract This paper assesses the quality of life of Palestinians and its determinants; and compares the results to similar assessments from 17 other developed and developing countries. An adapted version of the WHOQoL-Bref instrument was administered to a sample of 1008 adults selected from the general Palestinian population. Factor analysis and multiple regression techniques were implemented to determine the association between principle demographic and socioeconomic characteristics and scores of extracted principal determinants, and estimated overall and domain-specific QoL scores. Chronic and acute exposure to violence and entrenched conflict over generations has resulted in significantly lower QoL of Palestinians.

تقيس هذه الورقة نوعية حياة الفلسطينيين ومحدداتها وتقارن النتائج مع 17 دولة متقدمة ونامية. وقد طبقت صيغة معدلة من أداة بريف لمعرفة نوعية الحياة طبقًا لمنظمة الصحة العالمية على عينة من 1008 من البالغين اختيروا من مجموع السكان الفلسطينيين. وتم تطبيق كل من آلية التحليل العاملي وآلية مضاعف الانحدار لتحديد الترابط بين الصفات الرئيسية الديموجرافية والاقتصادية الاجتماعية وعشرات المحددات الرئيسية المستخرجة وكذا عشرات التقديرات الخاصة بنوعية الحياة كليًا وفي نطاقات محددة. وأدى التعرض الدائم والحاد للعنف نتيجة الصراع المستمر عبر الأجيال الفلسطينية إلى تدني نوعية الحياة بصورة ذات بال بين الفلسطينيين
