The Jordanian and Egyptian Labor Markets in a New ERA: Highlights from the Analysis of Two Labor Market Panel Surveys

FromJun 05, 2014 To Jun 05, 2014

AMMAN, JORDAN

As many countries struggle to construct economic policy in the aftermath of the Arab Spring, a dynamic analysis of MENA labor markets is particularly important. The work carried out by ERF based on the data from the labor market panel surveys for Egypt and Jordan adds substantial value to better understand the forces driving labor market dynamics and identifying policy priorities.

This seminar will comparatively tackle cross-cutting issues in both the Jordanian and Egyptian Labor markets, including labor market structure and dynamics in the two countries, gender issues in the labor market, a comparison of job accession, separation and mobility, and a comparison of labor supply and the role of the youth bulge.

The seminar will also serve as a platform to launch ERF’s newest edited volume of “The Jordanian Labor Market in the New Millennium,” edited by Ragui Assaad and published by Oxford University Press. The book volume provides an in-depth understanding of the Jordanian labor market issues based on the data analysis of the Jordan Labor market Panel Survey of 2010.

The event marks the launch of the Jordanian Labor Market in the New Millennium volume, and this half-day workshop will serve as a platform to highlight cross-cutting issues in both the Jordanian and Egyptian Labor markets, developed from the analysis of the labor market panel surveys data for both Egypt and Jordan.

Speakers and moderators included Ahmed Galal (Economic Research Forum), Ragui Assaad (University of Minnesota and ERF), Taher Kanaan (Arab Centre for Research and Policy Studies), Rana Hendy (Economic Research Forum), Ibrahim Alhawarin (Al-Hussein Bin Talal University), Chaima’a Yassine (Paris School of Economics (PSE) and ERF), Omar Razzaz (King Abdullah II Fund for Development (KAFD)), and Jawad Anani (Jordan Economic and Social Council).
